The biggest bands and artists in history have one thing in common. They are all unique.
Not one of them sounds like another artist.
Their sound and look is different and a style of their own.
Think of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses or Nirvana. Yes, they had some great music but it was different. It was fresh
The music was part of the package but not all of it.
Look at GNR, they came out at the height of “glam” rock. They took hard rock to whole other level.
If you want to stick out from the crowd, in a good way, then you need a plan.
Do these 2 things to be laser focused and make your band stand out.
1. Decide Who You Are And Write It Down
Decide who you want to be and write it down. Sounds stupid and simple but so many artists go from one style to the next looking for their big break. They flip from one thing to the next. I made the same mistake!
This doesn’t mean pick an artist you like and then copy them. Actually, it’s quite the contrary.
Pick your favorite style of music. Choose the look you are going for.
When Elton John came out (and I don’t mean of the closet), he was so shy and timid that he made up his mind that he would be as loud and flamboyant as possible.
He didn’t do this one day and not the next. EJ made the decision and stuck to it. You noticed him even if you weren’t looking!
Why write it down?
You need to write down your vision of yourself so that you can see it every day.
You need to be reminded of what you’re trying to accomplish and who you’re trying to be.
This is how you see yourself in perfect form.
Your vision of who you want to be will change but don’t worry about that for now.
Declare who you are and stick to it.
2. Before Every Task Look At Your #1
Every time you go to write a new song, record a song, build your website, take pictures or do anything with your music, you are going to read what you wrote down in #1.
Remind yourself every day of who you want to be.
By reading your vision statement for yourself you will ensure that you are on the right track and that you’re not wasting time.
It will keep you focused on your goal.
It will also clarify your message. People will know who you are and what you’re about from the start. They won’t have to figure it out.
Make it easy for fans to see who you are. They will relate with you faster and be able to spread the word easily.
